When seniors share their life stories with author Barbara Constantine, the result is a touching book titled Small Portraits of Very Big People, a title that captures its essence perfectly.
Constantine collaborated closely with fifteen residents of the Ehpad nursing home in Mézières-en-Brenne, a village in Indre (36). Through deepening conversations, they opened up, recounting pivotal moments from their pasts.
The narratives are brought to life with portraits by Berry-based visual artist Cécyl Gillet.
What unfolds are vivid slices of life filled with laughter, emotion, humorous anecdotes, and poignant memories. These endearing characters are portrayed with warmth and compassion. True to its name, the book features concise, accessible portraits in a cheerful, senior-friendly layout—ideal for those who may find longer reads challenging. It's a must-have for every nursing home library!
"Young and old alike may be surprised by these pages. It's true—Grandpa and Grandma weren't always gray-haired with bushy eyebrows, relying on walkers or dentures. Once, they ran, laughed, played, told jokes, did somersaults, faced heartaches, frustrations, fears, and even acne…
Their youth was fleeting. Some began working at 11. Tough times. Their games differed from yours—no tablets or consoles at Christmas; computers weren't invented. No TV, no phones (landline or mobile), no universal running water or electricity. Outhouses stood at the garden's end, and school meant miles on foot through rain, wind, or snow!
Imagine their world. These short texts and striking photos offer a glimpse. Why not visit and give them a hug? They crave love so much..."
Formerly a scriptwriter for film and TV, Barbara Constantine now focuses on writing (titles like Allumer le chat and And Then Paulette…), traveling, gardening, pottery, cooking, and connecting with others—family, friends, or Ehpad residents like these.
