In France, nearly 40,000 women could be affected by this important health alert. On July 27, the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) issued a press release regarding Ancora and Novaplus IUDs (alone or in a Sethygyn installation kit), manufactured by Eurogine in Spain. Authorities recommend the non-emergency removal of these intrauterine devices inserted in 2017, 2018, and up to March 2019. This follows earlier advice based on multiple reports, suggesting removal after three years of use.
ANSM highlights several serious risks, including a risk of spontaneous expulsion. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, irregular bleeding, or pain during intercourse. Additionally, instability can lead to contraceptive failure, potentially resulting in unwanted pregnancies. Thierry Thomas, ANSM's deputy director for medical devices, clarified to AFP that this is a precautionary measure without urgency, to be discussed and scheduled during your next gynecologist consultation.
