Cancer Research UK: Healthier Lifestyle Could Prevent a Third of All Cancers

Scientists at Cancer Research UK, the UK's leading cancer research centre and charity, have found that around a third of cancers could be prevented through better lifestyle choices. Drawing on 2015 national data—with insights applicable globally—up to 135,500 cases annually (2,700 per week) could be avoided by healthier approaches to tobacco, diet, and UV exposure. This equates to 37.7% of all UK cancers diagnosed each year.

Smoking tops the list as the most preventable cause, driving 1 in 6 cancers in men (32,200 cases) and 1 in 8 in women (22,000 cases). Overweight and obesity from poor diet link to 22,800 cases (13,200 in women, 9,600 in men) across 13 types, including breast, bowel, and kidney. A balanced diet could prevent 1 in 20 cancers.

Gradually Reduce Your Risk of Cancer

Excessive UV exposure—from direct sun or tanning beds—fuels 13,600 skin cancer cases yearly, or 3.8% of all diagnoses. Other avoidable factors include alcohol (11,900 cases), low fibre intake (11,700), air pollution (3,600 lung cancers), and physical inactivity (1,917 cases).

Cancer Research UK chief executive Harpal Kumar told Huffington Post UK: “Having a healthy lifestyle does not guarantee that the person will not be affected by cancer, but it does put the odds in your favor. The figures [from the study] show that everyone can make efforts to gradually reduce their risk of getting sick.” These powerful insights inspire us to build healthier habits today. Ready to start?
