Best Way to Remove Pesticides from Apples: Baking Soda Soak Proven by Science

Apples are a favorite fruit for many, but they often top the list for pesticide residues. British researchers tested washing methods to find the most effective way to remove these contaminants from the skin. Their study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, revealed that soaking in a water and baking soda solution works best.

Three Washing Methods Tested

The team started with organic Gala apples, then sprayed them with common pesticides used on these fruits. They washed the apples using three techniques: a water-bleach mix, plain tap water, and a 1% water-baking soda solution. All were rinsed with clean water afterward. After just two minutes, the baking soda method removed more pesticides than the others.

For thorough removal of chemical residues, the study's lead author recommends 1 teaspoon of baking soda per 500 ml of water, with a soak time of at least 15 minutes. This simple trick lets you safely enjoy the apple skin, packed with fiber and vitamins.
