World's Most and Least Active Countries: Stanford Study Reveals Daily Step Counts

Amid growing public health campaigns promoting regular exercise and healthier eating, researchers at Stanford University analyzed real-world activity data to uncover global habits. By tracking 700,000 anonymous smartphone users via the Argus app, they found the global average at 4,961 steps per day. Leading the pack is Hong Kong, with residents averaging 6,880 steps daily. At the other end, Indonesia trails with just 3,513 steps.

Top Performers and Areas for Improvement

Scott Delp, a lead researcher, calls the approach revolutionary: "The study is 1,000 times larger than any other on human movement [...] There are studies on remarkable health, but ours covers more countries and people, tracking activity continuously. This opens doors to research on a far larger scale." (Source: BBC). Standouts include China, Japan, Russia, and Spain. European nations like France, the UK, Germany, and Italy average 5,000–5,500 steps. Lower activity prevails in North Africa, the Middle East, and South America (marked red on the BBC map). North America falls between 4,500 and 5,000 steps. Time to step up—Hong Kong's leading the way!
