Chimpanzee Self-Medication: Scientists Study Wild Plants to Advance Human Health

A pioneering scientific program in Côte d'Ivoire is closely examining the dietary habits of chimpanzees, our closest genetic relatives sharing 98% of our DNA. Researchers focus on the plants these primates select for self-healing, treating issues like digestive problems, wounds, and fevers much like Kenya's elephants adapt their diet during pregnancy. Plants such as kroma, badi, and zoobo show promise for human use, leveraging chimpanzees' innate expertise in natural remedies.

Preventing Cancer and Fighting Infections

Analyzing 27 plants favored by chimpanzees, experts found several combat bacteria, curb infections, and inhibit cancer growth. Notably, 18% demonstrated strong antibacterial activity. West Africa's forests act as vast natural pharmacies, offering alternatives to synthetic drugs. These findings are in early research stages, with rigorous testing needed before potential pharmaceutical applications.

Moral of the story: You can't teach old monkeys to make medicine—they're already masters.
