While most doctors today recommend continuous eight-hour nights, polyphasic (segmented) sleep was a historical norm and is now endorsed by select sleep experts.
Before the Industrial Revolution and artificial lighting, segmented sleep synced with natural circadian rhythms. It was even advised for couples to conceive or enjoy intimacy after the first sleep phase for heightened pleasure. Known as “dorveille,” this method meant bedding down early before sunset, waking after midnight for one to two hours, then sleeping again until dawn. This wakeful interlude was seen as key to deeper, restorative rest.
Between the 16th and 19th centuries, physicians promoted polyphasic sleep, viewing the post-midnight hours as an optimal window for relaxation and stress regulation.
