Scotland's New Law: Smoking in Cars with Children Now Illegal with £100 Fines

Secondhand smoke poses serious risks not just to smokers but to anyone nearby, including innocent bystanders. The World Health Organization reports over 600,000 annual deaths from passive smoking worldwide. While many recognize the dangers of smoking in a car with children present, not everyone does. Scotland has just enacted a strict new law banning smoking in vehicles when children under 16 are passengers.

Tobacco-Free Generation

Violators face an immediate £100 fine (about €119), which can rise to £1,000 (about €1,170) if prosecuted in court. France has a similar ban, but penalties there range from €68 to €450—far less severe. This measure supports Scotland's government Tobacco-Free Generation initiative, targeting fewer than 5% adult smokers by 2034. Here's hoping it succeeds in protecting young lives.
