Fix These Common Bad Postures: Reading, Texting, and Watching TV

Reading a Book

Why it causes pain: Sitting on the sofa or lying in bed tilts your neck forward. Over time, this poor alignment leads to neck pain, stiff neck (torticollis) upon waking, headaches, shoulder, elbow, or wrist discomfort, and even tingling in the hands.

How to fix it: Keep your neck aligned with your spine. When lying down, place cushions under your lower back, neck, and knees so your gaze is perpendicular to your body. If sitting on the sofa, keep feet flat on the ground with knees at 90°. In either position, support your elbows with a cushion to avoid straining your arms.

Sending Texts (SMS)

Why it causes pain: Focusing on your phone lowers your head, crosses your legs, or stretches them out, while slumping forward with buttocks on the chair edge and a rounded back. This can result in neck, lower back, and spine pain.

How to fix it: Sit fully back against the chair's backrest. Rest arms on armrests or use a cushion under elbows to position the screen at eye level. Alternatively, sit on the chair's edge: feet flat, lean forward with a straight back, forearms on your legs, keeping neck and spine aligned.

Watching TV

Why it causes pain: Sinking deep into the couch or curling up with feet on the coffee table relaxes back muscles temporarily but strains joints over time, causing lower back or hip pain when standing, or knee issues if legs are cramped.

How to fix it: Sit with feet flat on the ground, knees at 90°, back firmly against the sofa backrest, head straight facing the TV, and elbows rested—one on the armrest, the other on a cushion. Opt for a firm-seated armchair with armrests, like a classic grandmother's chair.
