Why You Should Wash Pajamas Weekly: Study Links Dirty Sleepwear to Acne and Infections

How often do you wash your pajamas? Weekly? Every two weeks? Or once a month? A study from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine recommends washing them at least once a week. Researchers found that unwashed pajamas harbor bacteria that can trigger allergies, cystitis, and skin issues—including acne.

The study analyzed nightwear from 2,500 young couples who went more than two weeks without washing (averaging 13 days for men and 17 days for women).

The 'Sniff Test' Excuse

Among participants, 78% of men cited relying on others for laundry as their reason, while women often mentioned alternating pairs weekly but forgetting the cycle. Notably, 50% of men and 41% of women admitted they only wash if the pajamas smell bad.

A Build-Up of Harmful Bacteria

Even without odor, bacteria proliferate on unwashed fabrics. These include staphylococci (common in the nose but can spread to armpits or genitals) and E. coli (from fecal matter), potentially causing pimples, infections, and more.

Professor Sally Bloomfield, a key researcher, advises washing pajamas weekly to minimize risks. Prioritizing this simple habit supports better skin health and hygiene.
