How to Read Comfortably in Bed: Physiotherapist's Posture Guide

Find the ideal setup: Sit upright with your back and head propped on pillows against the headboard or wall—no slouching, to keep your spine straight. Rest a cushion on your thighs, place the book on it, and position your light source overhead or from behind.

Acceptable alternatives: Lie on your side with a straight spine (extended fetal position). Use a thin, firm pillow to support your head, prop the book on a distant stand, and rest both arms. For back-lying, add a cushion under your knees to aid circulation or relieve lower back pain, holding the book overhead.

Avoid these: Curled on your side (curves the spine, stiffens the arm) or stomach-down (compresses digestive and respiratory organs while arching the back, leading to neck and lumbar strain).
