Sustainable Furnishing Guide: Eco-Friendly Materials for Healthier Homes

When outfitting your home, opt for healthy, sustainable materials by prioritizing vintage or second-hand furniture. We also recommend donating or recycling items you no longer need.

For Wood Furniture

Select solid, raw wood from local sources like oak, chestnut, cherry, or walnut. These French-sourced woods are incredibly durable and naturally beautiful.

To ensure forest preservation—especially for non-local woods where indigenous communities must be respected—choose FSC-certified options (Forest Stewardship Council). This independent certification guarantees responsible forest management, protecting natural resources and local inhabitants.

A note for exotic wood enthusiasts: Protect the planet by avoiding teak, moabi, or azobé. If you can't resist, insist on FSC certification.

Preventing Indoor Pollution

Steer clear of brand-new furniture made from plastic, particleboard, laminate, or coated woods, as well as varnishes and lacquers.

These release VOCs (volatile organic compounds) from hydrocarbons, invisibly polluting indoor air from furniture, cabinets, paints, finishes, and textiles. Emissions from furniture can persist for years.

The most sustainable and health-conscious choice? Buy second-hand. Pollutants have already off-gassed over time. Hunt for deals at flea markets, consignment shops, online platforms, garage sales, or auction houses—it's budget-friendly too!
