Currently, assisted reproductive technologies (ART)—such as artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization (IVF), and embryo transfer—are available only to heterosexual couples in France. Eligibility requires being married or in a civil partnership with at least two years of cohabitation, facing medically certified infertility for one or both partners, or if one partner carries a serious genetic disease transmissible to a child. Sperm and egg donations are legally permitted. However, surrogacy (GPA) remains strictly prohibited.
If you've been trying to conceive without success, start by consulting your doctor or gynecologist. They can arrange infertility assessments for you and your partner to identify the issue and recommend appropriate treatments. If needed, you'll be referred as a couple to an approved medically assisted procreation (PMA) center. These centers, staffed by multidisciplinary teams including gynecologists-obstetricians and psychologists, provide personalized advice and determine the best technique—whether artificial insemination, IVF, or donations—for your situation. All procedures must occur in one of France's approximately 100 approved public or private facilities.
