EWG's Dirty Dozen: 12 Fruits and Vegetables Highest in Pesticide Residues

Fruits and vegetables are essential for a healthy diet, offering vital nutrients and natural wellness benefits. Yet, pesticide residues on conventional produce remain a significant concern. As experts in environmental health, organizations like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) provide critical insights to help consumers make informed choices.

Pesticides in Produce: The Most Contaminated Fruits and Vegetables

Since 2004, the nonprofit EWG has published its annual "Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce," analyzing data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This year's report examined over 38,800 samples—washed, peeled, or scrubbed before testing—revealing persistent pesticide issues even on non-organic items. Key findings include:

  • Nearly 70% of non-organic fresh produce sold in the U.S. contains potentially harmful chemical pesticide residues, per EWG's analysis.
  • Over 90% of samples of strawberries, apples, cherries, spinach, nectarines, and leafy greens tested positive for residues of at least two pesticides.
  • A single sample of kale, collard greens, and mustard greens can contain up to 20 different pesticides.
  • Imazalil, a fungicide linked to hormone disruption and classified by the Environmental Protection Agency as a probable human carcinogen, was found in nearly 90% of citrus samples tested by EWG in 2020, and over 95% of tangerine samples by USDA in 2019.
  • Bell peppers and hot peppers, tested for the first time since 2012 and 2011 respectively, now appear on the "Dirty Dozen" list, with concerning levels of acephate and chlorpyrifos—organophosphate insecticides harmful to children's brain development, banned on some U.S. crops and entirely in the EU.
  • Frozen versions of top-contaminated items like spinach and strawberries still carry high pesticide levels.

The Clean Fifteen: Least Contaminated Non-Organic Produce

Balancing the concerns, EWG also highlights the "Clean Fifteen"—non-organic fruits and vegetables with the lowest pesticide residues:

  • Avocados
  • Sweet Corn
  • Pineapple
  • Onions
  • Papaya
  • Peas (frozen)
  • Eggplant
  • Asparagus
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Kiwi
  • Cauliflower
  • Mushrooms
  • Honeydew
  • Cantaloupe
