For this study, researchers recruited 61 patients with mild to moderate depression. Participants were divided into two groups: one maintaining their usual posture, the other adopting an upright stance. In the upright group, they straightened their backs and shoulders, imagined stretching the crown of their head toward the ceiling, and drew their shoulder blades down and back. A band was placed around their back to support this position.

Participants then faced a stressful challenge: delivering a speech to an audience for at least five minutes.

Upright Posture Boosts Enthusiasm and Reduces Negativity

The results were compelling. Those in the upright posture group reported feeling less dejected and more enthusiastic, reflecting increased energy and reduced negativity, according to the researchers. Questionnaire responses showed they used fewer self-referential terms like "I" and "me," indicating less rumination on personal troubles. However, without long-term follow-up, the study couldn't confirm sustained benefits. Experts stress this technique supports symptom management but is no substitute for professional depression treatment.
