Older adults have shown the most progress. The guideline calls for 2.5 hours per week of moderate to intensive exercise. Among those over 65, compliance rose from 22 percent in 2001 to 40 percent in 2019. Additionally, 75 percent meet recommendations for bone- and muscle-strengthening activities.
Teens aged 12 to 18 have also improved: sufficient exercise rose from 34 percent in 2018 to 41 percent in 2019. While they meet guidelines less often than other groups, 71 percent exercise weekly—the highest rate.
Of Dutch people who exercise weekly, 74 percent are members of a sports club, gym, dance school, or swimming pool.
